The I.E.Tamm Theory Department
is the part of the P.N.Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Nobel Prize in Physics 1958 was awarded I.E.Tamm (jointly with P.A.Cherenkov and I.M.Frank) "for the discovery and the interpretation of the Cherenkov effect".

The Nobel Peace Prize 1975 was awarded to A.D.Sakharov.

The Nobel Prize in Physics 2003 was awarded V.L.Ginzburg (jointly with A.A.Abrikosov and A.J.Leggett "for pioneering contributions to the theory of superconductors and superfluids".

The research stuff of the Department is 81 scientists, the total stuff is 87 people. 7 post graduate students are accomodated.

The Department is administered by the Administration Staff, which consists of the director and three deputy-directors.
There is also a
Scientific Council which works out main research programs, considers projects and plans of research, calls hearings of progress reports, discusses problems connected with changes in structure of the Department, etc.

The Department consists of seven laboratories:
  astrophysics laboratory,
  elementary particle physics laboratory,
  high energy physics laboratory,
  relativistic field theory and quantum statistics laboratory,
  condenced matter physics laboratory,
  superconductivity laboratory,
  theoretical biophysics laboratory.
